The UK Screen Heritage Network is a group of museums, archives, media producers, broadcasters and academic institutions that has come together under the auspices of the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA) to advance the concept of screen heritage and encourage its preservation and promote wider access. With the aid of an MLA Renaissance programme grant, the Network is now embarking on its first major collaborative project – to identify those institutions in the UK with collections of moving image and screen-related artefacts.
We wish to make contact with museums and archives across the nation to uncover the treasures held in their collections. Although the deadline for the online survey was Friday 7 December 2007, it will still be possible for you to fill in a form. It is open to any UK collection with artefacts relating to the moving image and screen entertainment which may be accessible to the public or researchers. The information gathered will be used to create the first-ever online directory of moving image objects in UK collections.
The directory will:
- encourage a wider understanding of screen heritage
- promote greater access through a centralised guide for researchers and the general public
- help inform future strategy for the UK’s screen heritage and its custodians
The data will be added to the British Universities Film & Video Council’s Researcher’s Guide Online database of UK audio-visual collections, making a unified research resource of value to academia, the heritage industry, the commercial footage industry, and the general public.
